Emergency Response to Severe Acute Malnutrition (region-wide)

Due to the location of our facilities, we find ourselves right in the heart of one of the most severe drought and hunger crises the region has ever seen.

In the Horn of Africa, mothers and children are approaching us in despair, some having walked for days in search of help. Where we are constructing a rural hospital to link with our already existing clinics, our facility is months from opening, yet our roster is overflowing. Mothers and children are approaching us in despair, some having walked for days in search of help. Members of our construction team, locals who live in this region, beg us to make house calls to neighbors or in some cases to their own children, many whom easily fit the profile of severe acute malnutrition: meaning these people—mostly children— face death within weeks or days without emergency intervention.

Plan International, a Canada-based agency that’s monitoring the crisis, estimates that here over 21.1% of children are in the stages of severe acute malnutrition.

KHI is in a position to help those in need. Our system of clinics and village health teams can quickly mobilize once they have the necessary medications and supplies delivered to their sites. We can ameliorate this devastating crisis by providing mothers, fathers and their children with access to life saving medications and nutrition regiments, administered under the care of physicians, nurses and health care workers.
